Preparing for an Interview
The summer before my first year of college I became interested in the Student Government Association at my school. I went in for an interview the week before school started. Because I wanted to prepare myself I came up with 5 tips that I think are useful for any interview.
Are you sure you want the job?
Do you see yourself with this organization or company for more than a year?
Before you apply or go into an interview be sure that you want the position. You don’t want to waste your time or the time of others.
This past summer I went in for an interview at a company that sells kitchen knives. I signed up because the pay sounded nice, but also because it would be a new experience. In the end, I got the position but didn’t take it. I didn’t feel the need to take the job. I didn’t see myself there.
Learn about the company beforehand.
What are the company’s goals? What's the history? Are there any reviews?
This will not only be beneficial during an interview but for yourself. You’re learning something new. Visit their website and social media.
I found out about one company because they contacted me and I had no idea what the company was about. I did my research before I called and made an interview appointment. I needed to know what type of job I was looking at.
Prepare the night before.
You don't want to stress out the day of the interview, pick out your outfit the night before. Wear something comfortable and appropriate.
I take inspiration from Pinterest and fashion magazines. I know a lot of people say to not wear bright colors to an interview. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with color as long as it’s not overdone.
Bring in your RESUME!
This is one thing you can’t forget. Even though you may not need it, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
When I go into an interview I always bring my resume as a back up. In many cases, I have sent it in before the interview and usually, they don't ask for it again.
Also, remember to bring in a notebook and pen or pencil. You may want to write something down during the interview.
Tell us about yourself.
What are your strengths and weaknesses? How can it be applied here?
Why do you want to join our organization or company?
Questions like these will be asked during an interview. Out of all the interviews I have been in, (which aren’t many) I have been asked those questions. Try to write down your answers beforehand to know what you want to say.
Be truthful and yourself during an interview. How have your interview experiences gone?
